Coffee questions, answered

Practical answers, visible sources and a useful place to go next.

Is a flat white stronger than a latte?

It can taste more coffee-forward when a similar espresso dose is combined with less milk. That does not automatically mean it contains more caffeine: the coffee dose and extraction matter. Names and serving sizes vary between cafés. Compare the actual espresso and milk quantities in the Drink Atlas rather than relying on the name alone.

Is a cortado stronger than a cappuccino?

A cortado usually places more emphasis on the espresso relative to its milk, while a cappuccino includes a more aerated milk component. Serving conventions vary. Compare dose, milk volume and total serving; “stronger taste” and “more caffeine” are different questions. The Atlas makes its illustrative quantities visible.

What is the perfect espresso ratio?

There is no one ratio that guarantees a good result for every coffee. Ratio is beverage mass divided by dry coffee dose. An 18 g dose producing 36 g in the cup is 1:2. Record the dose, yield and taste, then make a deliberate adjustment. Beverage volume and crema are not a substitute for weighing yield.

What should my coffee grind size be?

Start with the guidance for your brewing method and grinder, then adjust against the observed brew. A dial number is specific to the grinder and its calibration. Keep coffee dose and water quantity steady while evaluating a grind change, and record time and taste. A universal grind-number chart cannot replace that local reference.

Can you put water in a coffee grinder to clean it?

Do not add water to the grinding mechanism unless the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly call for it. Cleaning directions differ for removable parts, burrs and electrical assemblies. Unplug the appliance and follow its manual. A cleaning pellet, brush or removable hopper procedure is not automatically suitable for every grinder.

What is a Wiener melange coffee?

It is a Viennese milk-coffee tradition whose preparation and serving vary by café. Our Atlas presents one clearly labelled serving illustration alongside the preparation notes, rather than treating a single ratio as a universal definition. Read the coffee base, milk and foam quantities together.
